The Consortium Project proudly presents their debut show, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in their inaugural season.
It's no coincidence that Ken Kesey wrote Randle Patrick McMurphy's initials to coincide with the initials of "Revolutions Per Minute." The crescendo of incidents that occur after his arrival to the strict mental hospital is nothing short of a revolution. Since the novel was written in 1962, subsequently followed by the play, Nurse Ratched has been synonymous with the demise of individuality, and McMurphy has personified the ideal of freedom. Everyone is familiar with the tale of the non-archetypal hero that sacrificed himself, Christ-like, to provide his fellow mental patients with their salvation from conformity, repressed sexuality, and false diagnoses of insanity that leave them barren of confidence.
But are these themes relevant today? In our modern society, with the reforms in mental health treatment, gender equality, and sexual liberation, is the reminder of how corrupt society used to be necessary? Do we still need to cling to our fear of the "Big Nurse?" Do we still need to keep alive our paranoia of the Black Machine? The Consortium Project's production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest strives not only to answer these questions, but also to instigate their audiences to ask their own questions, because a reminder of our ability to question is always relevant. Through the resurrections of McMurphy, Nurse Ratched, Chief Bromden, and many others, we want to encourage our audience to always be in pursuit of finding the right balance of pride in how far our society has come since 1962, and awareness that our journey towards our own mental salvation isn't finished yet.
